Lessons from the Cats: Rest, Play, and Purpose

July 28, 20252 min read

We humans tend to overcomplicate things. Chase goals. Fill calendars. Question ourselves.
Meanwhile… my cats have it all worked out.

I do not hide it - I am a mad cat lady. I have 4. It was an accident having that many, it just sort of happened. In fact I flaunt it because when ever my social media features on of the cats - I get loads more views and interaction. I mean, even you, kind reader, are here right now - likely because tof the promise of cat antics and photos.

But owning cats is a privilege, a chaotic, hilarious, stressful, occasionally smelly, privalage.

Watching Mork, Rudy, Monster, and Smudge go about their lives has taught me more about success, confidence, and wellbeing than most self-help books.

Here’s what they remind me of every day:

🐾 1. Rest is Productive

Cats sleep a lot, like - a huge amount, and they never feel guilty about it.

They don’t “earn” rest. They just rest. And when they’re ready, they’re playful, sharp, and alert again. Imagine what would change if we allowed ourselves real rest, without shame.

Success doesn’t come from always doing.
It comes from knowing when to pause, recharge, and return with energy.

🐾 2. Play Isn’t a Waste of Time

My cats will chase a leaf for ten minutes straight, then strut away like they’ve completed a life mission.

Play lights them up. It connects them to curiosity, joy, and instinct.

How often do you make time for fun, without needing it to “achieve” or "prove" anything?

Joy is part of the journey.
We don’t need to wait for success to enjoy life, play is a form of presence.

🐾 3. You Don’t Have to Prove Your Worth

Cats don’t second-guess their value.

They don’t think, “Am I good enough to be on the bed?” they just get on the bed. And with 4 - they take over nearly all of it.

They take up space unapologetically. They demand for affection. They say no when they mean no. And they enforce it. With teeth and claws if they need to.

What would life look like if you trusted your worth, just as you are?

We could all use a little more cat energy:
🛋 Rest
🎾 Play
🌟 Worthiness without overthinking

So if you’ve been feeling stuck, burned out, or like you’ve lost sight of what really matters, maybe it’s time to learn from the cats.

You don’t have to hustle your way to happiness.

You just have to reconnect with what lights you up, and start treating yourself like someone who matters.

Be more cat basically.
